For your home—Spring home maintenance checklist

Spring home maintenance checklist
Cold Michigan winters can wear on your home. Spring is a great time to inspect your home and make any necessary repairs. Many of the same areas you checked in the fall should be examined again in the spring.
  • Trim and prune foliage. Make sure you don’t have any vegetation growing against your home. This is a good time to apply weed killer and replace mulch.
  • Look over your steps, deck and patio. Repair any loose boards and fill any cracks.
  • Inspect the skirting. It should be secure, but have proper venting. Repair any dents or holes.
  • Clean gutters and downspouts. Remove all debris and check for leaks and holes. Water should run away from the home.
  • Examine your roof. Repair or replace any broken or missing shingles.
  • Wash window and door screens. Be sure to check for holes and repair where bugs could get in. Replace any screens that are beyond repair. Tighten loose frames and hinges.
  • Check smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. Test and replace batteries. Smoke detectors should be replaced every 10 years, carbon monoxide detectors every five.
  • Have a professional inspect your air conditioner once a year. Replace filters regularly and dust all registers.
